Why Isn't My Hoya Blooming

Hoyas, also known as wax plants or flowers, are known for their beautiful and fragrant blooms. They are relatively easy to care for, but getting them to bloom sometimes requires a bit of patience and attention to their specific needs. Let's look at some of those needs.

Maturity

Many hoyas need to reach a certain level of maturity before they start blooming. Some may bloom in just a few years, while others require five to seven years. If your hoya isn't blooming yet, it may simply need more time to mature.

Watering

Proper watering is crucial for hoyas. They prefer to dry out almost completely between waterings. Overwatering or poorly draining soil can prevent blooming. Always check the soil moisture before watering and ensure that excess water can drain out of the pot.

Light

Adequate lighting is essential for hoyas to bloom. While they tolerate lower light conditions, they thrive in bright, indirect light. Placing your hoya near an east-facing window or a few feet away from a southern or western window (with some protection from direct sunlight) can promote blooming.

Fertilizing

During the active growing season (spring and summer), you can fertilize your hoya plant with a well-balanced organic fertilizer. Fertilizing every time you water with a product like THRIVE can support healthy growth and potentially encourage blooming. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the fall and winter months when growth slows down.

Tendrils

The long vines with few leaves on your hoya are called tendrils. These tendrils are normal and can eventually produce flowers. Avoid cutting them off and allow them to grow and vine around as they please. With time, these tendrils may develop into beautiful blooms.

By providing your hoya with the right conditions, including proper maturity, watering, lighting, fertilizing, and allowing tendrils to develop, you can increase the chances of seeing those lovely hoya blooms in the future. Patience and consistent care will likely be rewarded with stunning flowers from your hoya.

I hope this helped with any hoya questions you might have had, but if not you can always reach out to me and I am happy to answer any questions you have.
